Unemployment should be a personal responsibility and at best should be a mandatory percentage each worker must set aside for themselves, not a tax.

[UPDATED] Lawmakers Still Working on Unemployment Insurance Deal

A conference committee continues to hammer out a compromise bill that would delay a tax increase on businesses to support the state's bankrupt unemployment insurance fund. Democrats are seeking a provision that would target employers who hire independent contractors to avoid paying unemployment benefits, a move opposed by Republicans. Democrats are also criticizing some Republican lawmakers who are refusing to approve other bills, including legislation that would give schools more flexibility to deal with funding issues.


In an effort to encourage compromise, Governor Mitch Daniels and House Speaker Pat Bauer held a 40-minute meeting Wednesday, although no final agreement was reached.
